Tragedy on the Mediterranean coast: 2,000 feared dead in flood disaster in Libya

Eastern Libya is currently being hit by a flood disaster. At least 150 people died in the flooding caused by storm “Daniel”.

Casualties were reported in the coastal city of Derna, the region around the coastal city of Jabal Al-Akhdar and on the outskirts of the city of Al-Marj, officials told the AFP news agency on Monday. The storm also caused “significant property damage.”

However, the feared number of deaths is certainly higher: the authorities in the city of Derna fear more than 2,000 deaths. Thousands are still missing. Libyan Prime Minister Osama Hamad said this on Monday to the television channel ‘al-Masar’. Libya is located in North Africa and borders the Mediterranean Sea.

Storm depression also caused flooding in Greece

The port city of Benghazi was also hit by the massive flooding. A curfew was even imposed there and schools were closed.

According to authorities, hundreds of people in hard-to-reach areas were further cut off from the outside world. Military-backed rescue teams tried to reach them.

Storm “Daniel” had previously hit Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria with extremely heavy rainfall. ‘Daniel’ caused devastating floods, especially in Thessaly, Greece.
