Only after four days could he get help: Norbert J. was lost in the Alps.

After four days alone in the forest, Norbert J.* (86) was found again on the Alpspitze (2,628 meters) in the Bavarian Alps. As the police announced, the hiker had traveled from Speyer in Rhineland-Palatinate to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to climb the Alpspitze.

According to reports, he last spoke to his wife on the phone Wednesday evening and announced that he would spend the night on the mountain and descend on Thursday.

According to police, there has been no contact since then; On Thursday evening, the police in Garmisch-Partenkirchen received a missing persons report. Police immediately launched foot and aerial searches by the mountain rescue service and alpine police officers, which lasted several days. There was also a public search for J.

He called his wife, who was desperately waiting

The 86-year-old was found exhausted but safe by a cyclist on Sunday afternoon. According to police, he had been wandering in the woods for four days and then came across a forest road beneath a cabin. The missing man lay there very exhausted – hoping that other hikers would find him.

Finally an Austrian mountain biker passed the hut. Norbert J. was able to attract the cyclist’s attention and asked for an emergency call. He then immediately called his desperately waiting wife to tell her he was still alive. The man was rescued by the mountain rescue service and taken to a hospital for examination.

In a brief conversation with an Alpine police officer, the missing man confirmed that he had spent days and nights in the Alpspitz area since Wednesday, according to police. Because he had lost his mobile phone in the meantime, he could no longer get help. The hiker had no provisions with him; he last drank from water holes in the forest. According to the police, he initially could not say where exactly he spent the night. (AFP/jmh)
