British police have arrested a suspected Chinese spy who worked for the British Parliament’s investigative service and had access to influential politicians. As first reported by the Sunday Times, another man was also arrested in connection with the case. Scotland Yard confirmed both arrests.
According to the newspaper, the research assistant was a British national who had lived and worked in China. He is said to have influenced British China policy for years.
The arrests took place in Oxfordshire and Edinburgh in March. The two men have been released on bail and will appear in court in October on espionage charges, the Metropolitan Police said.
Former Tory party leader Ian Duncan Smith, known for his critical stance towards China, told Times Radio that the country had been “deeply infiltrated by the Chinese”. He called for a tightening of security controls in parliament and a reconsideration of the government’s China policy.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak raised “significant concerns about Chinese interference in Britain’s parliamentary democracy” during a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on the sidelines of the G20 summit in India, Downing Street confirmed on Sunday.
The Chinese side said only that Li Qiang had called on Sunak in New Delhi to resolve differences in an orderly manner and respect each other’s core interests and top concerns, China’s Xinhua news agency reported. The report did not discuss the espionage affair. (sda/dpa)
