Incident at Chicago Airport: Flight LX9 from Chicago to Zurich was about to take off at 7:10 PM (local time) when the Boeing 777-300 encountered a flock of birds. The pilots decide to abort the take-off – and have to make an emergency stop, a Swiss spokesperson confirmed to Blick.
The maneuver causes the brakes to overheat and the fire brigade is called. The rescuers arrive quickly on the scene. No fire has broken out, the Swiss spokesperson told Blick. Runway 9C must be closed.
No one was injured in the incident. The machine was pulled back to the gate and the passengers were able to leave the plane unharmed. According to the spokesperson, the passengers were housed in hotels and the plane is currently being examined for damage.
Other flights were also affected by the incident and had to be diverted. The reason was apparently that all available fire brigade forces had been deployed on the Swiss aircraft. Before these were operational again, no other aircraft could land or take off.
A passenger wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “I’m on a United flight from Nashville to Chicago. Just seconds before landing, our plane went from 100 feet to 5,000 feet in just a few seconds!” The pilot then announced that the airport was closed due to an emergency. (neo)
