Wang Fang sings the song “Katyusha” in the ruins of the opera house.

About 600 people, mostly women and children, died in the Mariupol Opera House. The Russian bombs hit the building and killed the civilians hiding in the basement. Since then, Mariupol has been occupied by Russia.

A Chinese delegation of all people traveled there, including the well-known singer Wang Fang (38) in her homeland. A video shows her standing in the ruins of the opera house singing the song “Katyusha”.

“Example of Complete Moral Decay”

“Katyusha” – the multiple rocket launcher Katyusha was named after it – is a Soviet-era folk song that became popular during World War II and appealed to the populace to serve and defend their country.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko expressed his outrage at the video. “The appearance of the Chinese ‘opera singer’ (…) is an example of complete moral decay,” he wrote on Facebook.

Wang Fang is married to Zhou Xiaoping, a Chinese ultra-nationalist anti-American writer and blogger whose writings have been praised by President Xi and brought him national fame.

Beijing demanded an explanation

A member of the Chinese delegation told reporters that during the visit they witnessed the pain and devastation of the city caused by the war, according to the Times. However, the man praised Russia, saying: “Construction work continues, schools and housing are being built, the theater is being restored.”

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has now asked Beijing for an explanation. The visit of the Chinese delegation is illegal. (neo)
