Rain record in Hong Kong: ‘Extreme conditions’ paralyze parts of the city. Britain returns to EU research programme

Record rainfall has led to flooding in Hong Kong and paralyzed part of public life. The government of China’s special administrative region spoke in a statement of “extreme circumstances” on Friday. Schools remained closed, companies were asked to release their employees.

The Hong Kong weather station recorded a new rain record for part of the city on Friday evening. At the observatory’s headquarters, 158.1 liters of rain per square meter were measured within an hour. This is the highest level since records began in 1884. A black warning has been issued for further heavy rainfall.

The Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post reported on roads turning into raging rivers. Images of flooded underground car parks and subway stations were shared on social networks. Extreme rainfall also occurred in the neighboring Chinese metropolis of Shenzhen.

Typhoon “Saola” hit the region only this weekend with heavy rain and showers. (sda/dpa)
