The jury found the 74-year-old guilty of refusing to provide documents and testify before a House of Representatives committee of inquiry into the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. A verdict will be announced at a later date. In both cases, he faces between 30 days and a year in prison.
“Peter Navarro made a decision,” the Washington Post quoted prosecutor Elizabeth Aloi as closing arguments. “He chose not to obey a subpoena from Congress. Our government only works if people follow the rules. And it only works if they are held accountable if they don’t.”
Navarro had argued that he failed to comply with the subpoena because Trump directed him to say he was exempt because of executive privilege.
Navarro is the second Trump adviser to be convicted of failing to cooperate with the commission. Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison last fall for contempt of Congress, but has appealed the decision and is still awaiting the outcome. Navarro also announced that he would take action against the decision.
The Commission of Inquiry assessed the events of January 6, 2021: on that day, Trump supporters violently stormed the House of Representatives in Washington, where Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election was about to be confirmed.
