It is common knowledge that all good things come in threes. But a man from Florida was not deterred and tried to cross the Atlantic for the fourth time in his self-built ship. For this, Reza Baluchi (51) had built a kind of hamster wheel for people at home.
His destination was London, about 6,000 kilometers away. But the Iranian resident didn’t get far: According to the Coast Guard, he was captured near Georgia on August 26, shortly before Hurricane Idalia hit. He then refused to leave his floating vessel for three days, which the Coast Guard later described as “obviously unsafe”.
On August 29, officials managed to convince the former professional cyclist and marathon runner to leave his self-built ship. Baluchi was charged in federal court in Miami on Tuesday with obstructing boarding and violating the harbor master’s order.
According to court documents, this was Baluchi’s fourth attempt in a decade to cross the Atlantic on a homemade device. According to court documents, the Coast Guard intervened each time.
