Tropical Storm Lee has gained strength over the Atlantic Ocean and has been upgraded to a hurricane. The hurricane, with initial winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, will develop into an “extremely dangerous, severe hurricane” on Saturday on its way to the Lesser Antilles island chain in the eastern Caribbean, the US Hurricane Center (NHC) said. on Wednesday (local time).
According to the NHC, “Lee” was about 1,100 miles east of the northern part of the island chain. Rapid intensification of the storm can be expected. Wind speeds of 119 kilometers per hour or more are called a hurricane.
The hurricane season begins on May 15 in the Pacific and June 1 in the Atlantic. It ends in both regions on November 30. Tropical cyclones form over warm ocean waters. Global warming increases the likelihood of severe storms. (sda/dpa)
