The EU has agreed to send 40 observers to Armenia. These observers will monitor the border with Azerbaijan there and try to restore peace.
Both countries have been locked in conflicts over the Nagorno-Karabakh region for decades. The conflict flared up last summer. Fighting between the two countries killed hundreds of people last month, pending a US-brokered ceasefire.
The mission will last up to two months and will be tasked with “setting boundaries” and “building trust,” the EU said. This should help settle the conflict. Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to the observers’ arrival at a European summit in Prague last week.
On Friday, the Mission’s Quartermasters arrived in Armenia to smooth the way for their 40 colleagues. They should start shortly.
