Fear of Ukrainian drones: Russians want to protect their fighter jets with tire tricks

The Russian armed forces are afraid of drones. This is shown by satellite images.

The fear of drones is rampant in Putin’s army! Time and time again Ukraine causes massive damage to airports in Russia with targeted aerial attacks. Last week, several heavy army transport planes were hit in the western Russian city of Pskov. Videos on social media showed a veritable sea of flames. The fire brigade tried to save what could still be saved.

But that’s not all: logistics centers, military factories – even the Russian capital Moscow and the Kremlin – are not immune to attacks from the air. That is why Vladimir Putin (70) has now built anti-aircraft towers as in World War II in Moscow. The Pantsir S-1 air defense system is mounted on 50-meter high iron towers and ramps. You have to shoot down the Ukrainian drones in time.

At the same time, the Russian troops are also trying to protect themselves. Not with anti-aircraft towers, but with tires. This is evident from satellite images from Maxar Technologies of the English air force base, which is located deep in the interior of Russia. Two Tu-95 bombers worth about 46 million francs were provisionally covered with the car tires. According to experts, the tires not only provide a kind of protective layer against attacks, but also reduce the findability of the aircraft, especially at night.

“Even though it seems kind of crazy, they seem to be doing their best”

However, the effectiveness of the Russian trick is limited. “It could reduce the heat signature for exposed strategic aircraft installations on airfield platforms, but they will still be detectable with infrared cameras,” Francisco Serra-Martins of drone manufacturer One Way Aerospace classifies the pneumatic tactics for CNN. “Although it seems rather silly, they seem to be doing their best to upgrade the planes, which are otherwise easy prey. Whether that works depends on which warhead the missile/drone has,” CNN quoted another expert as saying. He assumes the tapes are used to deflect fragments from an explosion over the military fighter jets.

NATO also assumes that the tire campaign provides protection against drone attacks. An anonymous source told the American broadcaster.

With the wave of drone attacks, Ukraine is trying to weaken Russian support for the internal war. In the past week, six Russian regions have been attacked. It was the largest drone strike on Russian soil since the start of the war. (no)
