Macron told the French daily Les Echos (Monday edition). “As in the Corona crisis, our Europe is in a moment of truth (…). We must act with unity and solidarity,” said the French head of state. What is needed is a European rather than a national strategy.
“There is European solidarity with Germany, and it is normal that Germany also shows solidarity with Europe,” Macron emphasized. However, he is confident “in the strength of the Franco-German couple and in our ability to pursue an ambitious strategy together”.
Criticism of the German “Defensive Shield”
To combat the energy crisis, the federal government has launched a €200 billion “defense shield”. This is intended in particular to finance the planned gas price brake. Berlin is therefore heavily criticized by the EU partners. Several heads of state and government fear that the German “defensive umbrella” could push gas prices further.
