German tourist damages fountains in Florence – while taking a selfie Applause for Woody Allen’s new film ‘Coup de Chance’ – but also protests

These photos are expensive: a German tourist caused significant property damage while climbing on one of the most famous fountains in Florence. According to the city council, the 22-year-old climbed the Neptune fountain in the Italian art metropolis on Monday evening to have photos taken of himself.

A piece of marble broke from the monument’s chariot. In addition, the hoof of a horse that the man had jumped on was damaged. The damage is estimated at 5000 euros.

The authorities tracked down the holidaymaker using images from the surveillance cameras. Florence Mayor Dario Nardella posted one of the resulting photos on his Facebook page on Monday. He blackened the face of the young German, but wrote: “There is no justification for ignorance and vandalism against cultural heritage.”

The tourist must now take into account a high fine. The octagonal fountain dates from the 16th century. It was extensively restored in 2018. (sda/dpa/jaw)
