The canton of Valais has ordered the shooting of a wolf in the Ferpècle – Arolla region. The lone wolf killed eleven animals, including a cow.
The canton writes in a statement on Tuesday that the animals were in a protected location on an agricultural area and on two alps that could not reasonably be protected. The conditions for a launch are thus given.
Revised federal regulations allow a lone wolf to be shot if it has killed at least six sheep or goats within four months. Previously, the threshold was the killing of ten farm animals. The shooting decision, which was published in the Staatsblad on Tuesday, is valid for sixty days as long as the cattle are within the shooting zone and the risk of damage remains.
The canton of Valais had already ordered the shooting of a single wolf in the Brigerberg-Ganter region in August. In addition, the canton of Valais has applied to the Federal Environment Agency (FOEN) for permission to set up a wolf pack in the Nanztal. Two other wolves have already been shot this year in Valais, one in Goms and the other in the Brigerberg-Ganter region. (sda)
