“We are in a deep crisis that dramatically affects our lives, our security, our economy, our society and our human behavior. It’s enough,” Herzog said in a video posted on Platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. Leadership must face reality, reach out and do whatever it takes to reach an agreement.

Reports of movement in the compromise negotiations had previously become known. “Attempts are being made to reach an agreement, but no agreement has yet been reached,” Herzog’s office said. Herzog has been trying for months to mediate between the coalition and the opposition. However, talks under his leadership have so far been unsuccessful.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government wants to introduce a series of laws aimed at weakening the country’s judiciary. For example, she argues that the Supreme Court is too powerful and meddles too much in political issues. Critics classify the plans as a threat to the separation of powers and thus to democracy.

Next week, Israel’s Supreme Court will meet for the first time with as many as 15 judges to review petitions against a recently passed core element of the judiciary review. If the court upholds the law and the government does not accept the decision, the country will face a national crisis.

According to the reports, the latest compromise proposal includes a revision of the law that was passed and suspending other parts of the judicial restructuring for 18 months. However, several of Netanyahu’s coalition partners, including Justice Minister Jariv Levin, have already made it clear that they would not agree to the proposal. Criticism also came from parts of the opposition and the protest movement, who are calling for the project to be halted completely.
