Survey: majority of Germans go to work despite illness

Only 28 percent of Germans stay at home when they are sick, the Funke media group (Monday editions) quoted from the survey.

According to the study, working people are the most likely to go to work, at 49 percent, despite back pain. 38 percent work despite allergies. A third of employees with psychosomatic or psychological complaints also occur at work.

According to the survey, nine percent of those infected with corona enter the company, 17 percent work from home and another 17 stay at home for a few days until the worst symptoms have passed. Eight percent of those affected make their decision to return to work depending on how busy they are at work. Only 33 percent of those surveyed stay at home with a mild course of the coronavirus until they are healthy again.

“Anyone who does not recover in peace risks viral illnesses that attack the heart or other organs or exacerbate symptoms suppressed by medication,” Gerd Herold, consulting physician at Pronova BKK, told the Funke newspapers. “In addition, workers can become infected.” Despite positive corona tests, the presence in the office is “an unreasonable risk”.

The experience with infection protection during the corona pandemic would not have changed the habit of showing up sick at work, Herold said: “Some fear that they are considered lazy or expect their colleagues to represent them.”
