Highway dug through the Great Wall of China: two people arrested Storms in Spain: deaths, chaos and a miraculous rescue of children

A 38-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman have been arrested in China’s Shanxi province, the BBC reports. They had dug a hole in the Great Wall of China with their backhoe to create a shortcut.

According to the detainees, they enlarged an existing hole. The police stressed that this caused “irreversible damage to the Great Ming Wall and the safety of cultural monuments”.

The damage was discovered on August 24 and the matter is under further investigation, police said.

The Great Wall of China has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987. Built again and again from the 3rd century BC to the 17th century. According to a report by the “Beijing Times”, more than 30% of the wall has already been irretrievably lost and only 8% is considered to be in good condition.
