Severe storms have killed a man in Greece.

One person died in severe storms in central Greece. A spokesman for the fire service confirmed this to the broadcaster ERT on Tuesday. The rancher was killed by a collapsing wall. Another man is missing.

Storm “Daniel” caused problems in many parts of Greece. Streets were flooded in a number of cities, Greek media reported. On the island of Corfu, the power went out and there were problems with the operation of the airport there. On the Sporadic islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos there was lightning and thunder at night, sometimes every second. In the Elis region of western Peloponnese, hail destroyed parts of the upcoming olive crop.

The weather, which is unusually rainy and stormy for the time of year, is expected to worsen locally over the course of Tuesday and continue through Thursday, weather forecasters from the state weather service Meteo warned. Central Greece and the Peloponnese are particularly affected.

Driving bans were imposed in many places. Around noon, the Greek civil defense sent a corresponding warning text message to, among others, the inhabitants of the port city of Volos and the Sporades island of Skiathos.

“It will continue to rain for many hours to come!”

It had rained so heavily there on Tuesday night that cars were swept away by the waters. In many places there was a temporary power failure and the mobile telephone network and internet temporarily did not work or only worked to a limited extent on Tuesday. In the cities of Larisa and Volos, 12,000 flashes were counted within two hours on Tuesday evening, the newspaper ‘To Proto Thema’ reported, citing the fire brigade.

ERT weather forecaster Panagiotis Giannopoulos said he had no recollection of 500 millimeters of rain falling in the region in 24 hours. “And it will continue to rain for many hours to come!” he warned. One millimeter of rain corresponds to one liter of water on one square meter. (SDA)
