Hundreds of cholera infections in Haiti, at least 35 dead

In Haiti, the latest cholera outbreak in and around the capital, Port-au-Prince, has killed at least 35 people. According to the Pan American Health Organization, more than 500 people have contracted the infectious disease.

Cholera can cause severe diarrhea and dehydration. The bacteria that cause the disease are easily transmitted due to the lack of clean drinking water and good sanitation. Both are rare in the country.

Armed Gangs

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and has suffered from corruption, violence and natural disasters for years. Recently, violent gangs are fighting for control of the capital and thousands of people are starving.

The United States and Canada have sent armored vehicles and other equipment to Haiti to help police restore order. Haiti’s transitional government this week asked the United Nations to intervene with an international armed force.

About 10,000 Haitians died in the last cholera outbreak in 2010. At that time, the disease was probably brought in from Nepal by UN peacekeeping forces.
