Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg (20) is due to appear in court in Malmö, southern Sweden, on Monday. According to the indictment, seen by the AFP news agency, she is accused of disobeying police instructions at a protest in Malmö last month. She must appear in court in the southern Swedish city at 9:30 am.

Thunberg had participated in the action of the environmental group Ta tillbaka framtiden (Taking back the future), in which activists tried to block the entrances and exits of Malmö harbour. The participants wanted to protest against the use of fossil fuels. At the time, Thunberg refused to leave the site of the blockade on instructions from the police.

Greta Thunberg has been protesting for years

“We don’t just want to watch, we want to physically stop the fossil fuel infrastructure. We are taking back the future,” Thunberg wrote on Instagram at the time. Thunberg faces a maximum sentence of up to six months in prison under Swedish criminal law. However, prosecutor Charlotte Ottosen told AFP that such offenses are usually punishable by fines.

As a 15-year-old, Thunberg began sitting in front of the Swedish parliament in Stockholm during Friday classes to demonstrate for more effective climate protection measures. Their weekly strike expanded into the global Fridays for Future protest movement in just a few months. Thunberg ended her school strikes in June because she graduated. The young activist regularly criticizes governments in harsh terms for not doing enough to combat global warming. (AFP)
