At least 15 people have been killed in a ferry accident off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. 19 others were still missing at sea, local rescue services reported Monday. The ferry with about 40 people on board was underway in Buton Tengah province when it capsized around midnight (local time). Six passengers have been rescued and are being treated in hospital.
The search teams used numerous boats and underwater cameras to locate the missing persons. The cause of the accident was still unclear. According to the authorities, the weather was good and the waves were moderate.
Shipwrecks are common in Southeast Asian Indonesia. In the country of about 17,000 islands, most people rely on ferries as a means of transportation. However, safety standards are often not met and the ferries are often overcrowded. (SDA)
