At least nine people have been killed in a bus accident in Colombia. According to local police, two minors were among the dead and at least 25 other passengers were injured. The bus had fallen into a canyon more than a hundred meters deep. The accident happened early Saturday morning (local time) near El Playón in the north of the South American country.
The exact cause of the accident is currently unknown, bus company Expreso Brasilia reports on Twitter. However, a Twitter user pointed out that while traveling with the same bus company, he had noticed serious flaws in the vehicle and behavior of the bus driver.
Survivor Yilber Lugo told journalists that the bus entered a curve at high speed. The bus wreck can be seen in the middle of the bushes in photos distributed by the country’s civil defense, and clothing is scattered around the area.
According to the military, “90 percent” of the bus occupants were Venezuelan migrants en route to the United States. The crashed bus started in the city of Cúcuta on the border with Venezuela and was on its way to Valledupar in northern Colombia.
Road accidents are one of the leading causes of death in Colombia. Last Tuesday, eight people were killed in the northern municipality of La Guajira after their bus collided head-on with a truck with a trailer.
