Four police officers from Marseille have been attacked by the judiciary for alleged acts of violence against a young man during the recent unrest in France. One of them is currently in custody, the public prosecutor announced on Friday. The four police officers allegedly beat a 21-year-old so badly that he was seriously injured in the skull and jaw.

The young man was also hit in the sleep by a rubber bullet, the prosecutor said. He may have permanently lost the sight of his left eye as a result.

It was initially unclear to what extent the 21-year-old had participated in the unrest. They erupted after a police officer shot dead a youth in a Parisian suburb trying to escape inspection in late June. Read more about it here.

Justice is investigating the four police officers for unlawful use of force. Several police unions protested against the pre-trial detention of one of the officers. “If they make mistakes, they will be punished. (…) But pre-trial detention is totally exaggerated,” said a spokesperson for the Alliance police union, explaining that many police officers in Marseille had already reported sick or were at risk of burnout.

So far, the police oversight has dealt with 21 cases in which police officers are accused of misconduct. The judiciary has also intervened in several cases, such as the death of a 27-year-old in Marseille, believed to have been killed by a rubber bullet.

During the protests at the end of June and the beginning of July, there were sometimes serious riots. Participants attacked members of the security forces with fireworks and projectiles.
