President Joe Biden (80) wants to put a woman in command of the US Navy for the first time in American history. Biden nominated Lisa Franchetti (59) for the leadership of the US Navy on Friday, the White House announced. If confirmed by the Senate, she would be the first woman to fill the role and the first female member of the US military chief of staff, officials said. She is currently deputy for current Navy Chief Michael Gilday (60), who is about to retire.

However, one of the senators in the congressional chambers, Republican Tommy Tuberville (68), has for some time blocked hundreds of military nominations in protest against a Defense Department rule that allows military personnel to receive certain aids in the event of an abortion. The White House has criticized the Tuberville blockade as “wrong” and “dangerous” in terms of national security. In the United States Senate, many formal proceedings require unanimity.
