Group of naked migrants found on Greek-Turkish border

Border guards spotted 92 migrants with no clothes and no luggage near the Evros River in northeastern Greece. According to the Greek authorities, the migrants were sent across the border from Turkey.

The migrants, all men, were found by Greek border guards on Friday. Officials from the EU border protection agency Frontex are said to have been there, but Frontex has not confirmed the incident.

Deploy rubber boats

It is unclear why the migrants were naked and crossed the border without luggage. Some were slightly injured. According to the German magazine Der Spiegel, some migrants told Greek border guards that they were taken to the border river in Turkish vehicles and dropped off there in rubber boats.

Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis posted a photo of the migrants on Twitter today. He calls their treatment by the Turks “a disgrace to civilization”. Ankara has not yet commented on the incident.

Greece wants to almost completely close the border on the Evros because more migrants are coming into the country there. A fence along the river is currently being extended.
