MSF: 18 staff members assaulted by gunmen MSF: 18 staff members assaulted by gunmen

According to their own statements, a team of the aid organization Doctors without Borders in the Sudanese capital Khartoum was threatened and mistreated by armed attackers.

The organization announced this on Friday. 18 employees were beaten and flogged in the immediate vicinity of the Turkish hospital. A driver was briefly detained and threatened with death. The incident happened Thursday.

“Unfortunately, if an incident like this were to happen again and medical care was hampered, our presence in the Turkish hospital would quickly become unsustainable,” said Christophe Garnier, MSF’s director of operations in Sudan.

A long-simmering power struggle between the president and the vice president has been raging in Sudan since mid-April. The army is fighting against the RSF militia of former Vice President Mohammed Hamdan Daglo.

Doctors Without Borders is one of the few aid organizations still active in Sudan. In Khartoum, health care has almost completely collapsed after months of fighting. Since the start of the conflict, there have been repeated attacks on aid workers and aid warehouses have been looted. There are also reports of sexual violence, particularly by the RSF militia, against women and girls. (saw/sda/dpa)
