In the case of the escaped Berlin lioness, a trail leads to the Arabian Remmo clan. Pictured here, from left: Wassim R., Rabir R. and Bachir R. – three perpetrators of the jewelry heist in Dresden.

Power, crime and a lion as a status symbol? This week, an alleged lioness kept Berlin in suspense. Authorities now believe it to be a wild boar. Nevertheless, the Remmo clan caused a sensation. One of clan boss Issa Remmo’s sons wrote on Instagram: “If anyone knows anything, let me know first and we’ll lead the lioness back to her enclosure before some idiot shoots her.” Firas Remmo suggested that he owns the lion – fooling the police.

But who is this dangerous group that regularly scares Germany? Blick has listed the most important facts about the Remmo clan.

1

Who belongs to the Remmo clan?

The Remmo clan is one of the largest family gangs in Germany. In its entirety it includes nearly 1000 people. A documentary by Spiegel TV from June shows how intertwined the different generations of the extended Arab family are.

The clan – similar to the Abou Chaker clan – is based in Berlin and is known for its serious crime. The gang’s power secures the family hierarchy. You stand up for each other, keep your back free.

Who are the main characters?

According to “Spiegel TV”, Issa and Kamar Remmo are the leaders of the clan. Issa has eight sons. His nuclear family is considered the main leadership of the clan. It consists of about 100 people. The extended circle includes the cousins and their relatives. According to “Spiegel TV”, the clan numbers about 1,000 people in total.

Who actually owns the lioness?

Young men in their 20s who have no education often become criminals. Leader Issa Rammo, on the other hand, likes to appear in the media as an entrepreneur and, unlike his sons, repeatedly speaks out on camera about the allegations about his family.

What crimes is the clan responsible for?

From major burglaries in banks or museums to drug trafficking and extortion to money laundering, the men in their 20s have it all. The stolen money is reinvested – in the purchase of real estate.

In November 2019, several hooded perpetrators broke into the residential palace of Dresden and stole various art objects and valuable jewelery with a total of 4,300 diamonds. The value can hardly be quantified, but is estimated at a minimum of 113.8 million euros. During the investigation work, DNA traces were secured that could be assigned to four members of the Remmo clan. The crime has been called the “coup of the century” by numerous media outlets.

relationship with justice

Clans are notorious for ignoring laws and rules. Again and again there is talk of a parallel world. State laws are not respected and punishments don’t seem to deter the clan.

Time and time again, the followers are sentenced to several years in prison for their aggravated thefts – but are regularly released again due to agreements between their lawyers and the prosecutor’s office. “The people in these clans who are criminals laugh at the police and the judiciary and don’t take them seriously,” Tom Schreiber, an interior expert for the SPD in the Berlin House of Representatives, told ARD in February.

You can’t get rid of the family. Some younger relatives were born in Germany and have German nationality. Others are stateless. Originally, according to “Spiegel TV”, the family would come from Lebanon.

How dangerous are family ties?

The Staatsrecherche in Berlin issued a warning about the clan in 2012. According to “Bild”, the authority has prepared a 43-page risk analysis that deals with the Remmo gang. It shows that between 2009 and 2011, 60 percent of family members appeared in criminal proceedings. (A)
