Albert Einstein’s letter, in which the famous physicist claims this God could not create the universe and science ‘replaces’ religionit was put up for sale for $125,000.
Written from Brooklyn, New York, the letter was published by US autograph dealer The Raab Collection.
The document was sent to Professor Martha Munk, who asked her if she thought it was possible “for modern scientist to reconcile the idea of the creation of the world by God, a higher power, with his scientific knowledge”.
It was purchased by Mrs. Munk’s descendants and was never publicly offered.
In response to her question, Einstein told Mrs. Munk in a letter dated April 11, 1950. stories in the Bible are taken literally it is obvious what kind of faith can be expected from the reader.
“I think, however, that a person who is more or less formed in scientific thought is alien to the religious creation (in the original sense) of the cosmos, because he applies causal conditioning to all criteria,” he added.
Nathan Raab, director of The Raab Collection, points out that this an exciting discovery and a truly historic letter from Albert Einstein.
At the time these letters were written, Einstein, who was Jewish, had been a US citizen for a decade and had fled Germany shortly after the rise to power of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party in 1933.
The letter to Munk was written four years before the controversial and famous “Letter from God” in which he combines his thoughts on religion, Jewish identity and his own search for the meaning of life.
In the Epistle of God from 1954, he claims that for him the word “God” is nothing more than an expression and product of human weakness. He considered the Bible to be a collection of honorable but rather primitive legends.
