22,000 Wagner Group mercenaries killed in Ukraine and another 40,000 wounded. This was published on a Telegram channel linked to the Wagner mercenaries. As of May 20, 25,000 recruits working for the paramilitary unit were “alive and healthy,” it said. Of these fighters, 15,000 are on furlough and 10,000 are currently in Belarus.

A total of 78,000 Wagner mercenaries took part in operations in Ukraine. The figures cannot currently be independently verified.

Huge toll of blood in Bachmut

The head of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, 62, said in May that he had lost 20,000 Wagner fighters in the months-long battle for Bakhmut. About half of them were convicts from Russian prisons. On June 30, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy (45) stated that Ukrainian fighters had killed 21,000 Wagner soldiers and wounded 80,000. According to a February White House estimate, Wagner lost more than 30,000 combatants, including about 9,000 casualties.

The future fate of the Wagner Group is uncertain after the failed uprising at the end of June. As part of an agreement brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko (68), Prigozhin subsequently agreed to move to Belarus.

Operations in Africa? Instructors in Belarus?

In a video address, Russian President Vladimir Putin, 70, said the Wagner soldiers “could continue to serve Russia by contracting with the Defense Ministry or other law enforcement agencies, or returning to their families and friends.” Putin added that anyone who wants to can go to Belarus.

In a new video, Prigozhin seems to indicate that the Wagner soldiers will conduct future operations in Africa and train the Belarusian armed forces. The state news agency in Belarus, citing the Defense Ministry, reports that the Wagner fighters are “instructors in some military disciplines”. According to a report from Russia, Wagner released all convicts from his ranks. (no)
