The Norwegian police yesterday arrested a Russian in the northern city of Tromsø for photographing the airport in the polar city of Kirkenes with a drone, among other things. It is close to the border with Russia. Photos of a Norwegian defense helicopter were also found on his memory cards.
Russians are banned from flying planes in Norway. The police have asked the judiciary to detain the man for four weeks so that further investigations can be carried out. A security service is also involved.
The 51-year-old Russian said he arrived in Norway via the Kirkenes border crossing on Thursday. He would have been on his way to Spitsbergen, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.
On Tuesday, a Russian-Israeli man was arrested during a check at the same border crossing. Two drones and data carriers were found in his car. He entered Norway on August 25 on a tourist visa. “He was carrying a large amount of data which we are searching,” police said yesterday.
Police were also yesterday investigating a report of a drone at a gas plant in Kaarstø in southern Norway. Drones have also been spotted at other oil and gas facilities.
