At least 48 injured after suspected gas explosion in South Africa’s Wirecard lawsuit: letter from Marsalek leads to dispute in court

At least 48 people were injured and one person died in a suspected gas explosion in the economic metropolis of Johannesburg in South Africa on Wednesday afternoon. The authorities announced this on Thursday.

The accident happened on a busy street in the center of the city. Eyewitnesses reported a loud bang after a slight quake. The road then collapsed. According to authorities, 34 cars were damaged.

Investigators suspect the explosion may have been caused by a rupture in an underground gas pipeline. Several roads in Johannesburg are still closed because further explosions cannot be ruled out.

Fatal gas accidents occur again and again in South Africa. Recently, 16 people died after a gas leak in the town of Boksburg, 20 kilometers from Johannesburg, earlier this month. (saw/sda/dpa)
