For days, experts in Australia have puzzled over the origins of a mysterious object that washed up on a remote beach north of Perth.
Now the Australian Space Agency (ASA) assumes that it is the housing of a solid rocket motor, the authority announced on Wednesday. “We are continuing to identify the missile type and origin in collaboration with our global partners,” the ASA wrote on Twitter. Solid fuel rockets are used in the aerospace industry today for both military and civilian purposes as a flying start.
The cylindrical canister, made of lightweight carbon fiber material and nearly 10 feet high and 8 feet wide, was discovered on Green Head Beach on Sunday. At first it was completely unclear what it was about. After a detailed inspection, authorities announced that the premises were safe and did not pose a threat to people. However, residents were asked to stay away from the gold-colored glittering part. (saw/sda/dpa)
