Adoption of children: Number of applications in Germany decreased slightly

The number of adoptions of children and young people in Germany fell slightly last year. As the Federal Statistical Office announced in Wiesbaden on Wednesday, it fell 0.6 percent from the previous year to 3,820 in 2022. That was 23 fewer adoptions than in 2021. More than two-thirds, or 2,652, were adopted by stepparents, a new partner or a partner new partner of a biological parent.

According to the Federal Bureau, the trend towards the adoption of younger children, which has been going on for decades, will continue in 2022. In 54 percent of the cases, the adopted children were under three years old. In 2021, the share was 49 percent. In 2012 this was 34 percent, in 2002 it was only 25 percent. According to the information, this is due to a change in step-families. Stepmothers and stepfathers now often adopt their partner’s children at a very young age.

Few international adoptions

However, as in previous years, intercountry adoptions played only a minor role. In 2022 there were only 121 in Germany, which corresponds to a share of three percent of all adoptions. Ten years ago, the share was three times as high, according to the Federal Bureau. In 2012 it was nine percent.

All in all, the number of adoptions has been roughly constant over the past ten years and fluctuates only slightly. It was always between about 3700 and about 4000.
