There are temperature records in Mallorca – Greece fears drought Tens of thousands demand the resignation of the Prime Minister in Bangladesh

The heat has gripped southern Europe. As temperature records tumble in Mallorca, a Greek meteorologist makes extremely gloomy predictions about the near future.

The third heat wave of the summer in Spain brought several temperature records to Mallorca. According to the national weather service Aemet, eight communities and cities on the Mediterranean island were hotter on Tuesday than at any time since measurements began.

The highest value was reported by Aemet in Mallorca from Sa Pobla, about 40 kilometers northeast of the island’s capital, Palma: 43.9 degrees. That’s 0.9 degrees above the previous high from 1983, it said. These are always provisional readings that are easy to correct.

Greek meteorologist: “The worst is yet to come”

Although temperatures in Mallorca have not yet broken the official Spanish record of 2021 (47.6 degrees on August 14, 2021 on La Rambla in Andalusia), a Greek meteorologist predicts conditions in Greece this summer as in the hot year 2021. At that time, tens of thousands of hectares of forest and vegetation burned down in Greece due to the heat, the associated drought and the wind.

Theodoros Giannaros of the National Observatory in Athens is concerned about the fatal phenomenon: “Tomorrow (Thursday) the risk of fire may decrease slightly, but over the weekend the weather will be very high,” Giannaros said, referring to the announced new heat wave . wave on the state broadcaster ERT.

A new heat wave is expected in Greece from Thursday, which will peak at the weekend and can lead to 44 degrees locally. The subsidence of the heat wave on the following Monday was then accompanied by strong winds again. Then every spark could start a huge fire, for the winds fed the embers and the flames and also drove the sparks over great distances, so that new sources of fire were created.

In Greece, firefighters battled three major fire fronts for the third day in a row on Wednesday. The fire service could not give peace to the wildfires west of Athens, a spokesman for the authority said on Wednesday morning. Further west, near the town of Loutraki, the fire was not contained by mid-morning. There was also a fire on the holiday island of Rhodes; there was a forest area of about 30 hectares on fire. However, houses or villages were not initially threatened, as was said.

But Giannaros says: “The worst is still ahead of us.”
