Climate activists who threw soup at Van Gogh in London charged

The climate activists who emptied cans of soup over a Vincent van Gogh painting at the National Gallery in London yesterday have been charged. The two women, aged 20 and 21, are suspected of vandalism, British police said. You will have to answer before the judge later.

The painting, one of the versions of the sunflowers, was not damaged itself as it is behind glass. It can also be viewed again by museum visitors. The frame has some damage.

The suspects belong to the Just Stop Oil campaign group, which is calling on the British government to halt oil and gas projects. After emptying the soup cans, they taped themselves to a wall in the museum. Another member of the group streamed the footage on social media.

Criticism of the Destruction of Art

In the last few weeks there have been other actions by members of Just Stop Oil. The smearing of Van Gogh’s canvas drew a lot of criticism from people who don’t see the connection between caring for the environment and the destruction of art.

A group of protesters also gathered at police headquarters in London later in the day yesterday. There, a New Scotland Yard sign was doused in yellow paint. A protester blamed for this must also be brought to justice.

A total of 28 people were arrested yesterday during the actions in the British capital.
