The Iranian authorities have announced the return of the notorious moral guards to enforce the headscarf. Starting on Sunday, units of the responsible vice squad across the country will crack down on offenses involving foot and car patrols, the Isna news agency reported, citing an Iranian police spokesman.
After the mass protests in the autumn of 2022 against the country’s political and religious leadership, the infamous units had disappeared from the streets of major cities. The demonstrations were provoked by the death of Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini. The young woman died in police custody after being arrested for violating Islamic dress codes.
The Iranian security apparatus brutally suppressed the protests. In recent months, many women demonstratively ignored the headscarf requirement, also as a sign of silent protest. The state responded with, among other things, a controversial bill that will soon be voted on in parliament. The law provides for new and severe penalties for violations. (cst/sda/dpa)
