Protesters in Tel Aviv

In Israel, tens of thousands of people have once again protested against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned judicial reform. Especially in Tel Aviv, but also in other cities, countless people gathered on Saturday night to express their opposition to the controversial project. It was already the 28th Saturday demonstration against the reform plans.

“This is a fight for our country, we want to keep Israel democratic,” protester Nili Elezra told AFP news agency in Tel Aviv. The government’s judicial reform aims to reduce the powers of the judiciary and the Supreme Court and to strengthen the position of parliament and the prime minister. The protesters accuse the government of trying to weaken the country’s independent judiciary and undermine democracy.

The protests also target the right-wing religious government and Prime Minister Netanyahu, who was hospitalized on Saturday. However, after just a few hours, he published a video message in which he explained that he felt “very good”. He was only dehydrated after a long stay “in the sun, without a hat, without water”.

However, the doctors decided that the 73-year-old should stay in hospital overnight. The weekly cabinet meeting has been moved from Sunday to Monday.
