According to the Sunday Times, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace (53) intends to resign in the foreseeable future.
The newspaper reported on Saturday evening that he had decided to leave the cabinet at the next cabinet reshuffle. The next cabinet reshuffle could therefore be in September. Moreover, he is no longer a candidate in the next parliamentary elections, which will take place in 2024.
“I’m not going to run next time,” the paper quoted him as saying. Wallace has been Britain’s Defense Secretary since 2019.
There had been speculation about Wallace’s future in the hours before. Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, 43, is preparing to reorganize his top team for the next election, according to the Times. His party is currently far behind the PvdA in polls.
Wallace took over as Secretary of Defense four years ago, then under Prime Minister Boris Johnson (59). He subsequently retained the post of minister in both the government of Liz Truss (47) and Sunak’s current cabinet. As British defense minister, he helps coordinate how Ukraine is helped to defend itself against Russia. (SDA)
