Europe is currently being gripped by one heat wave after another. Temperatures of around 40 degrees during the day and 30 degrees at night make life difficult for people in large parts of southern Europe. In Spain, Turkey, but also in Bulgaria, meteorologists are warning of the next heat wave.
Greece is at the height of the current heat wave. 87 weather stations in the country registered values above 40 degrees on Friday.
The highest temperature of the year so far was 44.2 degrees in Thebes, about 50 kilometers northwest of Athens, the National Observatory announced on Saturday.
Meteorologists also don’t expect the heat to dip over the weekend. For the second day in a row, authorities closed the Acropolis in Athens during the hottest hours.
According to information from the Ministry of Culture, the tourist attraction is closed from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm. On Friday, a tourist even suffered heat stroke while visiting the Acropolis Hill.
Due to the high drought, the risk of forest fires is also increasing, civil protection and the fire brigade warned on Saturday. A forest fire has already broken out on the holiday island of Naxos. This could now be extinguished with fire engines and helicopters.
In Italy, on the other hand, it remained bearable at around 35 degrees during the weekend. From next week, however, the high-pressure area “Caronte” could set record values, according to the meteorologists.
More than 40 degrees are predicted in major cities, including Rome, Bologna and Florence – in parts of Sardinia up to 47 degrees.
On the Mediterranean island of Sicily, the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe of 48.8 degrees could be cracked. For the elderly, the sick and small children, these high temperatures during the day are extremely strenuous and extremely dangerous.
But even in the north of the country there is no cooling in sight. 38 degrees is predicted for Milan on Tuesday.
The south of Spain has also been dealing with extreme heat for days. In parts of Andalusia, maximum daytime temperatures repeatedly exceeded 40 degrees. At night there is hardly any cooling down, because even then it is still 30 degrees warm here and there. In the early morning it is coolest around 25 degrees.
More than 40 degrees are expected in Córdoba for next Monday. Also in Mallorca people start to sweat. For Tuesday, 40 degrees is also possible in the interior of the island.
In Turkey, the west coast in particular suffers from the heat. According to the Anadolu news agency, 48 people with heat stroke were treated in hospitals there on Saturday. Temperatures of up to 42 degrees are expected in the holiday region of Antalya at the weekend.
Even in the north of Bulgaria the heat is hitting. After a short relaxation on Monday, it should be extremely warm there again. Meteorologists expect values around 40 degrees. (ced/SDA)
