Authorities say one person has been killed in an accident at a nuclear fuel plant in Russia’s Ural Mountains. “The incident was quickly localized and does not pose any risk to the population,” the Rosatom nuclear authority said on its Telegram channel on Friday. No radioactivity was released in the accident.
According to official information, a balloon containing about a cubic meter of depleted uranium leaked into the Ural Electrochemical Combine this morning. Accordingly, a locksmith was fatally injured in the pressure drop. The other employees were sent home after medical examination. Her life and health are not in danger.
According to the press release, depleted uranium has only about 60 percent of the radioactivity of natural uranium. The measurements did not lead to increased radiation levels. An investigation has been launched into the origin of the pressure drop in the uranium container.
The Urals Electrochemical Combine is located in the closed city of Novouralsk, 50 kilometers northwest of Yekaterinburg. The plant produced the first Soviet fissile material. Today it is part of the state nuclear authority Rosatom, which also has a monopoly on the construction and operation of nuclear power plants in Russia. (saw/sda/dpa)
