The “Great Kentucky Treasure” found by a man in a Kentucky field: more than 700 gold coins minted between 1840 and 1863.

Lucky find of life in the US state of Kentucky: A man discovered more than 700 gold coins from the American Civil War era in a cornfield in June. The historic coins were buried there more than 150 years ago.

The real pot of gold dates from the 1840s to 1863, writes the specialist website GovMint.com. These include “super rare vintages”. The fund includes 18 very rare $20 Gold Liberty coins minted in Philadelphia in 1863. Collectors sometimes pay six-figure sums for such a coin, according to GovMint.com.

“Total Madness!”

A video released by the website shows a man digging up the coins and can’t believe it. The gold coins are covered in dirt and grime. “It’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened,” says the man, who keeps discovering new coins in the sand. “This is total madness!” said the exalted finder.

Apparently, it wasn’t uncommon at the time for people to bury their money during wartime for safekeeping, a numismatist told USA Today.

The coins will likely sell for a hefty premium, the Mint says, due to the mystery surrounding their discovery. The “Great Kentucky Treasure” is listed for sale by GovMint.com and is expected to fetch millions of dollars.

time capsule

“The importance of this find cannot be overemphasized,” said coin dealer Jeff Garrett, who was contacted by the anonymous finder. “The incredible number of over 700 gold dollar pieces represents a real-time capsule on American Civil War coins.”

Kentucky had remained neutral during the Civil War between the Northern and Southern States (1861-1865), but nevertheless became involved in the conflict. “The ‘Great Kentucky Treasure’ may have resulted from this conflict. The coins have been lost for more than 150 years,” said the Numismatic Guaranty Company, which certified the discovered coins.

The identity of the lucky finder remains anonymous. The exact location remains a secret. (SDA/kes)
