The four-party coalition fell apart a week ago after a dispute over migration policy. As a result, right-liberal Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who was Prime Minister of the Netherlands for almost 13 years, surprisingly announced his retirement from politics. However, he intends to remain in office until a new government takes office.

One possibility is that after the elections in the politically fragmented country, another puzzle of parties will come together to govern, possibly again under the leadership of Rutte’s right-liberal VVD. However, polls also show that the Netherlands is moving to the right and that the new right-wing populist farmers’ movement BBB has achieved a major victory. It is conceivable that the BBB and the VVD will form a cabinet together. The right-wing populist Geert Wilders and his previously isolated “Partij voor de Vrijheid” are also pushing for power.

The VVD’s preferred candidate to succeed Rutte is Justice Minister Dilan Yesilgöz. But who will campaign for the party in the election campaign will not be decided until August; there are other interested parties. The Turkish-born minister is seen as a young star within the VVD. So far, the country has had no woman as head of government and no politician with a migration background at the head of the government.
