In Malta, two brothers have been convicted of the murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed in a car bomb in 2017. The brothers have confessed to planting the bomb and were both sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Galizia investigated corruption in Malta following revelations from the so-called Panama Papers in 2016. She often targeted politicians, including then-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and some ministers.
Wealthy Maltese businessman Yorgen Fenech is suspected of having ordered the murder. A life sentence was demanded against him.
After the death of Galizia, connections between high-ranking government officials and Fenech came to light. Several cabinet members are said to have received money from him. The scandal, under pressure, sparked massive protests that forced Prime Minister Muscat and his government to resign.
As special rapporteur for the Council of Europe, MP Pieter Omtzigt investigated Galizia’s murder and its aftermath, and sharply criticized Muscat and other politicians.
Last year, another suspect in the case was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty.
