The fate of Donald Trump could be decided in Georgia. Preparations for another serious charge against the ex-president have not yet been completed. But every day the decision in the state gets closer.
Prosecutor Fani Willis said the charges could be ready anytime between July 31 and August 18. A grand jury will then decide whether the prosecution’s allegations warrant indictment and a trial. Trump’s chances are extremely slim because the evidence is overwhelming.
Here, in the southeastern United States, on January 2, 2021, Trump called Georgia Republican Secretary of the Interior Brad Raffensperger. A published tape recording can be heard asking then-President Raffensperger to “find” 11,780 votes. It would have been as many votes as it would have taken Trump to beat Joe Biden in Georgia.
If charges are actually brought, Trump is threatening no less than a lawsuit for attempted election manipulation. While it seems almost every day that a former US president is charged with these and other serious alleged crimes, the case in Georgia is particularly explosive for Trump. Because in the end it could cost him his election victory in 2024.
According to forecasts from various political institutions, the likely distribution of votes in almost all states in the US in presidential elections next year will be very clear: whether the Republicans win or the Democrats win. In four major federal states, however, the result is currently quite open. In addition to Arizona, Wisconsin and Nevada, Georgia is also one of these extremely important states. This means campaign teams will target their campaigns specifically at these states to win over voters.
A pending court case in the key state of Georgia would also place a heavy burden on Donald Trump without a verdict. In his first election in 2016, he won this contested state well ahead of his then opponent, Hillary Clinton. In 2020, however, he lost to Joe Biden by 0.2 percentage points, exactly the distance he wanted to make up with 11,780 votes that Brad Raffensperger “found.”
The second round of elections for an important seat in the US Senate made clear how dramatic the situation is for Trump in Georgia. Former soccer star Herschel Walker, who was endorsed by Donald Trump, lost to Democratic nominee Raphael Warnock. If Trump fails to win over the majority of Georgia’s population, it will be even harder for him to beat Joe Biden. An indictment would keep the memory of Trump’s manipulative behavior alive in the people of Georgia. By 2024 at the latest, this could seriously harm him and his party.
Thus, the anticipated lawsuit in Georgia could already threaten Trump in the party’s internal election campaign. Even if large segments of the party’s voters are loyal to him, the prospect of a possible subsequent defeat to Joe Biden is an important argument for opponents such as Ron DeSantis, Mike Pence or Nikki Haley. Under the motto “Whoever lets Trump win the primaries loses in 2024”, the other candidates could at least try to convince the grassroots. The question is, however, whether so much foresight can be expected from the members.
In any case, Trump and his lawyers will once again be counting on a mix of public abuse and formal delay. Early on, Trump accused Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis of pushing the case against him for purely political reasons to rig the upcoming election. In no other case does Trump distort reality as much as in Georgia.
If the Atlanta “grand jury” actually rules in Trump’s favor in the coming weeks, a third serious indictment against a former US president would follow. It would be a triple historical novelty. Trump is on trial in Manhattan, New York, for allegedly falsifying business documents in connection with hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. In Florida, Trump faces 37 counts of alleged misuse of confidential government documents and obstruction of justice.
