Due to threats!: Dutch Minister of Finance leaves politics

class=”sc-29f61514-0 fQbOYE”>

Sigrid Kaag has been Minister of Finance since January 2022.

Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister Sigrid Kaag (61) leaves politics because of intimidation and threats. After the fall of the cabinet, Kaag announced in The Hague on Thursday that he was no longer available as a top candidate for the left-liberal party D66. “For me, in addition to love and appreciation, the past was accompanied by hate, intimidation and threats,” said the 61-year-old. However, she will remain in office until the elections and the installation of a new government.

In an interview with Trouw on Thursday, Kaag complained about misogyny, among other things. “The resistance says, I’m afraid, something about the social climate in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, there is misogyny. Especially if women dare to stick their heads out.”

As the newspaper wrote, other Dutch politicians would also be threatened in their private lives. In comparison: Kaag received the most hate messages. Her two daughters recently called on her to give up politics in a television program. They feared for their mother’s life.

The Dutch four-party coalition fell apart last Friday in the dispute over migration policy. Prime Minister Mark Rutte (56) surprisingly announced his departure from politics on Monday. He will not run for office again, but will remain in office until a new government is formed. An official date for the new elections has not yet been set. As the newspaper “De Telegraaf” reported on Thursday with reference to government circles, November 22 is the target. (Darling)
