British actor Robbie Coltrane has died at the age of 72, his manager Belinda Wright has announced. He starred in several films and television series from the 1980s but is best known for his role as Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter film series.

“Robbie will probably be remembered best for decades to come as Hagrid, a role that was enjoyed by children and adults alike,” says Wright. “The role has drawn a flood of fan mail every week for the past 20 years.” De describes Coltrane as “a unique talent.”

In 2002, Coltrane was nominated for Britain’s premier film awards Bafta in the male subcategory for his portrayal of the half-giant, an award he did not win at the time. In 2016 he won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Actor, a major television award in the UK.
