These scenes are not for the faint hearted: Several «last generation» activists glued themselves to the Heinrich-Heine-Ring in the northern German city of Stralsund on Wednesday afternoon. The blockade so angered some road users that they took action before the police arrived.
They tried to drag the climate stickers off the street, strangle them and threaten them with violence. This is evident from a video circulating on Twitter. The “Ostsee-Zeitung” initially reported on the protest.
As of 2.30 pm, the activists had gathered to protest against a planned LNG terminal in the region. Two demonstrators clung to the street moments later. Cars, trucks and the like could no longer pass in either direction.
A truck driver behaved particularly aggressively. When he had to interrupt his journey because of the stabbing action, he got out without further ado and attacked a demonstrator. He then got back into his truck and drove off, although there were still people on the road directly in front of him.
An activist got a little carried away. He almost fell under the truck. The driver reacted, got out again, pulled the young man to the side of the road and ran.
According to the “Ostsee-Zeitung”, the police are now looking for the truck driver. The registration number of the vehicle, which is believed to belong to a distributor of medical gases, is known to the agents.
Around 4 p.m., the emergency services managed to free the two people trapped on the road from the asphalt. It was the first protest of the “last generation” in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The German and Austrian climate activists of the “last generation” are trying to enforce their demands in the fight against climate change with roadblocks and other actions.
With their actions they trigger controversial social debates time and time again. Some climate stickers have already been prosecuted for multiple actions. (nad)
