Justice was looking for Matteo Messina Denaro (61) for 30 years. The boss of the Sicilian mafia Cosa Nostra was the most wanted criminal in Italy. Finally, the mafioso was arrested in Palermo in January.
Nevertheless, other mysteries surrounding Messina Denaro are still unsolved – including the matter of assets worth several billion euros, which the mafia boss had set aside. Now new clues lead the investigators back to Switzerland, as reported by the “Aargauer Zeitung”.
So far, authorities have been unable to track down the “treasure” of the Cosa Nostra boss. The search is still ongoing. The Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s Office confirmed reports to “AZ” that a new request for legal assistance had been received from Palermo. This request is currently “pending”. However, the federal prosecutor’s office is currently not conducting any criminal proceedings in this context.
According to Italian reports, the investigators have discovered that an apartment in Campobello di Mazara (I), which Messina Denaro used as a shelter, belongs to a couple from Baden AG. When questioned, the couple managed to make it credible that they had no idea who the tenant was. Under the name Andrea Bonafede, the mafioso has been renting the property since 2007 for 250 euros per month.
The lease was made through relatives of the couple. In the meantime, it is still unclear whether these relatives did not know who they were dealing with.
Another trail leads to Schlieren ZH: a very close confidant of Messina Denaro came from this community – according to the records, it would have been a lover. The confidant was born in Schlieren in 1975. She and her husband were accomplices. They would have allowed Messina Denaro to live in Campobello di Mazara without attracting attention until shortly before his arrest. They would also have housed the mafia boss in the house.
In addition, the woman took on the role of a “switchboard”, allowing Messina Denaro to communicate with other people. The couple is now in custody.
A previously unexplained trail to Basel could also yield information about the mafia boss’s “treasure”. A Sicilian trader was based there who allegedly supplied masses of antiquities to Messina Denaro’s father Francesco. The valuable artifacts were stolen from robbed tombs in Sicily. According to witness statements, the boss of Cosa Nostra later took over the business. (Darling)
