“I live my life, I don’t care about anything else”: The super rich laugh at climate stickers in a private jet

He is rich and does not care about the climate: Theo Stratmann prefers to enjoy his life – without restrictions.

Climate stickers will cause chaos on the border between Germany and Switzerland on Tuesday. Activists paralyze traffic in Konstanz for hours and eventually even have to be chiseled out of the ground. With their blockade actions, the Kleber hope, to the annoyance of the population, that the climate issue will be reconsidered on a political and social level.

At the same time, the super-rich sit in private jets and laugh at the climate stickers. Because you don’t care about climate change. This is evident from a new film by the German research collective STRG_F (stands for search and find, editor’s note). In it, a reporter accompanies young rich people in their daily lives. This shows that entrepreneurs are not or hardly aware of the climate.

For example, Theo Stratmann (18), who reportedly made a lot of money from e-commerce and likes to present his luxurious life on social media, candidly says: “In some situations I don’t really care about the climate, my own comfort is more important to me. “

“Not So Enlightened”

A short private jet to Sylt is no problem for him. Theoretically you could also easily travel by train. But the 18-year-old doesn’t want that because he doesn’t want to limit himself. “I think climate change is unstoppable anyway. That’s why I’d rather hit the shit than stay on the street.”

Other young rich people are also not very enthusiastic about the idea of saving. Can Mandir (23), who also claims to have made a lot of money trading online, flies in a private jet from Hanover (D) to Nice (F). From there it goes in the fat sports car, which consumes significantly more petrol than a normal car, to Monaco for a business appointment.

“I’m not so sure,” says Mandir when asked about the CO₂ emissions he causes with the private jet flight. “What we consume here, in terms of kerosene – I don’t know.” His excuse: “If you explained that more to people, people would become more aware of it.”

For example, even his expensive jewelery does not allow him to take the train, says Mandir. As an example, he takes his wristwatch, a gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual worth several tens of thousands of francs. “For example, I can’t ride the subway with this watch on. It doesn’t work.”

The super rich cause gigantic CO₂ masses

It would be necessary to reduce the emissions of the super rich. Figures from the Stockholm Environmental Institute show that the richest ten percent of the world produces nine times more CO₂ per capita than would be needed to meet the 1.5 degree climate target.

According to a report by “Zeit”, an average citizen in Germany emits eleven tons of CO₂. The so-called super-rich, who have more than $100 million in their bank account, on the other hand, have as much as 2000 tons of CO₂, sometimes even more. The Swiss figures are in a similar range.

In the end, it turns out that the richest ten percent of the population causes more CO₂ than the middle class, which makes up about 50 percent of all people in Germany. Some of the super-rich have responded by selling their private jets, for example.

The young entrepreneur Stratmann can only laugh about it. One night when the reporter accompanies him to a party – in the exclusive private lounge, of course – he picks up a bottle of champagne and pours it into the ice bucket with the words, “Here. I’d call that a sin. I’m living my life, I’m happy – and I don’t give a fuck about anything else.” (zis)
