Actually, last Wednesday Easyjet flight EZY3364 from the Canary Island of Lanzarote to Liverpool in Great Britain was ready for departure. The passengers were already seated. The luggage was stored. But then the pilot reported from the cockpit with a curious announcement: the plane could not take off because it was too heavy.
In a video currently circulating on Twitter, the pilot can be heard explaining to passengers exactly what the problem is, the “Liverpool Echo” reports. It’s not just because the plane is heavy. “The heavy aircraft in combination with a fairly short runway and the current adverse conditions here in Lanzarote mean that the aircraft is too heavy to take off.”
The bad weather conditions and the short runway therefore made departure impossible. But there was a solution so that the machine could still take off. The pilot further explained that he coordinated with the crew. The idea: Some passengers have to get off.
With a lighter aircraft, nothing would stand in the way of takeoff. And so that volunteers could also be found, there was a financial incentive.
As a reward, the voluntary leavers were promised 500 euros in compensation. In addition, Easyjet also covered the costs of accommodation and meals for the volunteers until their later return flight. And so in the end 19 passengers braved the hardships and left the plane. For example, the Airbus was able to take off to Great Britain with a delay of almost two hours.
